Principles of the Transfer System

One of the biggest advantages of traveling in Seoul is its affordable and efficient public transportation. The "Integrated Transfer System," which allows you to switch between buses and subways freely to save costs, is essential knowledge for any trip to Seoul.

Under the metropolitan integrated transfer system, discounts apply for up to 5 rides (4 transfers), including the initial boarding. By efficiently connecting buses and subways within the set time limits, you avoid paying the basic fare repeatedly and only pay the additional fare proportional to the distance traveled.

The "Golden Rules" of Transfers

  • Always Tag Off: You must touch your card on the terminal when getting off a bus. If you forget, the transfer discount will not be applied to your next ride, and you may even be charged an additional fee.
  • Time Limit: Transfers must be made within 30 minutes of getting off (within 60 minutes between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM).
  • Group Travel: While you can pay for multiple people with one card on a bus, transfer discounts only apply to the cardholder. For group travelers, it is more economical for each person to use their own card.
  • Re-boarding Restrictions: Transfer discounts do not apply if you re-board the same bus route or after you have already arrived at your destination.

Which Card Should You Use?

  • T-money / Cashbee: The most common prepaid transit cards. They can be purchased and topped up at convenience stores, or via kiosks in subway stations.
  • Climate Card (Kihoodonghaeng Card): A season pass offering unlimited use of public transport (subway, bus, Ddareungi bikes) within Seoul. Recommended for travelers staying in Seoul for several days who use public transit frequently.
  • Mobile Transit Card: Allows convenient payment using your smartphone's NFC function.

Tips for Travelers

Use Map Apps: Google Maps may have limited public transport information in Korea. We strongly recommend installing KakaoMap or Naver Map for accurate, real-time data.

Bus Color Coding:

  • Blue (Main Line): Connects major sections within Seoul.
  • Green (Branch Line): Connects subway stations to residential areas.
  • Yellow (Circulation Line): Circulates through major areas in downtown Seoul.
  • Red (Wide Area Line): Connects Seoul to satellite cities in the metropolitan area.
